Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) commissioned us to create an animated film for the OASI2 project, replacing a lengthy and complex patient leaflet with something more accessible and engaging. The aim is to help reduce the risk of severe perineal tears during birth and the potential complications they can cause.

The subject matter is important, but not always easy to explain. We worked through the information carefully, developing a clear visual approach and script that could communicate the key points without overwhelming people with medical detail.

A working group of pregnant women and midwives reviewed the material throughout development, and we used their feedback to refine both the script and visuals. This helped us make sure the film was understandable, appropriate and genuinely useful to the people it was designed for.

The finished animation was localised into six languages, with subtitles provided in a further six, making the information accessible to a much wider audience.

The film is now part of RCOG’s patient-facing OASI information and supports conversations with pregnant women and birthing people during antenatal care.

Making an important conversation easier

Severe perineal tears can be a difficult and sensitive subject to talk about during pregnancy. The information also needed to introduce some basic gynaecological anatomy, recognising that many women may not know the correct names for parts of their own bodies.

RCOG wanted to replace a lengthy, complex leaflet with something that could explain the risks, anatomy and ways to reduce severe tears clearly and accessibly.

The finished animation was then localised into six languages, with subtitles in a further six, helping make this important information accessible to a much wider audience.

Each version was professionally transcribed and translated, then checked by someone with medical knowledge to ensure the terminology and meaning were accurate.

We  carefully re-edited the animation for each language, adjusting the timing and visuals so that they matched the translated narration rather than using the original edit. So that is feels completely natural to watch.

We created an animated healthcare video for RCOG explaining how to reduce the risk of severe perineal tears during birth, localised into multiple languages.
