Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance

Digital Finch worked with Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance to create three short educational animations for the NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme. The animations explain three conditions that can be identified incidentally during a CT scan: lung nodules, emphysema and coronary artery calcification.

The films were designed to help patients understand what their scan results mean, what the conditions are, and what they may need to do next, turning complex what can be quite clinical information into clear, accessible visual explanations.

The challenge was to communicate medically accurate information without overwhelming or unnecessarily alarming the viewer.

The animations also needed to work for a broad audience aged 55–74 and meet accessibility requirements, including appropriate colour contrast, captions, and accessible subtitles.

Our approach

Working from scripts developed with the GMCA’s clinical team, Digital Finch developed a visual approach that made each condition easy to understand at a glance. So that people who receive this news feel informed, and know what to do next, rather than just call the GP.

Rather than relying on medical terminology or dense explanations, we used simple visual storytelling, clear animation and concise narration to explain what is happening.

Each animation focuses its own subject while maintaining a consistent visual language across the three films, creating a coherent set of resources for the lung cancer screening programme.

The project demonstrates how animation can play a valuable role in healthcare communications: not simply explaining a medical concept, but helping people feel more informed about what is happening to their health.

We created three short educational animations helping NHS lung cancer screening patients understand lung nodules, emphysema and coronary artery calcification found through CT scans.
